To capture the personality of the subject, I simply caught them in their natural state. For example, my dog happened to be laying on me, and he looked cute, so I took a picture. To get the candid shot, my family and I were watching America's funniest Videos, so when they were laughing I quickly snapped a photo. They had realized I took the photo, but not until after I took it. My favorite photo is the one of my dog because it almost seemed like he knew I was taking a picture, and he has a kind of smug look on his face.
